Works as advertised Apr 12, 2006
By Timothy B. Dereg I bought this item a few weeks ago for a remote cabin. I set it up to dial my cell phone and then had a neighbor try it. It works! And you can find it cheaper than what Amazon sells it. Just do a Google search for "Telespy".
The motion sensor is at one end of the base unit, so you need to keep the Telespy pointed in a direction most likely to be crossed by an intruder. It is sensitive to motion up to 30 feet away, according to the user manual, although I didn't do any actual tests on distance. I find that it gives me about 20 seconds of listening time before it hangs up. Contrary to the marketing claim, I would NOT say that it has an amplified microphone for picking up sounds - more like what an ordinary telephone can pick up, so you'll have a hard time hearing any background noises if you happen to receive a call when you're in a noisy area - such as while you're driving.
Picking up the receiver while it's auto-dialing will stop the call, which is handy if YOU happen to be the one who triggers it.
There are a few improvements I would like to see. I found that if the electricity is knocked out, the auto-dialer will be triggered when power is restored even though nothing actually activated the motion sensor. Maybe adding a battery backup would prevent this. Another would be the addition of a remote motion sensor (perhaps even wireless) that could be located beyond the reach of the phone cord. There are jacks on the Telespy called Remote In and Remote Out for for yet-to-be-developed accessories that are mentioned on the Telespy website, so perhaps a remote sensor is already on the drawing board. Another would be the ability to call it and have it act as a listening device, although in the wrong hands that would be considered an invasion of privacy.

Great alternative to monitored security system Apr 24, 2010

I bought this product to monitor my retail wine business. It falsed every hour and I could not figure out why for a week. I finally figured that the reason was because this phone is very sensitive and I had set the phone on top of a small refrigerator and every time the compressor turned on, I was called (Very stressful week of false alarms). I moved to a different location and I'm confident that if I'm called now, I have a intruder. I like the fact that I can listen to what is going on and make the desision whether or not to investige or call the police. I would recommend this product to a friend and buy another.

Works well, but has one flaw Aug 07, 2007
By HBJC The motion sensor/call feature works as it's supposed to. However, there is one problem. If you (and I assume anyone else) try to call home while you're away, the TeleSpy picks up on the first ring and dials the number you programmed. In other words, it blocks incoming calls to your house.
If you have call forwarding, voice mail, etc., this is no problem I guess. However, if you have a regular answering machine and expect it to record messages for you while you're away, it's possible this phone will not let any calls get to your machine.
I realize that the unit I received is likely defective and I contacted the manufacturer about it. I was told I would receive a replacement and provided my shipping address. The replacement never came; I twice replied to the manufacturer's original message to ask where the replacement was, but received no further response. The cost of the unit wasn't worth any more of my time and energy so I gave up. I will not trust this manufacturer in the future.

A must have for many people. Jul 01, 2011

The only down side I see to this item is it's name "Telespy" sounds like some kind of slooth toy. . .and it is everything but that. The phone is nice, and has a good feel to it.(not a light weight piece of junk). The sound quality is good and it functions nicely as a regular telephone.
I have two homes, 35 miles apart. I spend 3 days at one and 4 days at the other each week. I have a telespy phone at each place. I have them both set to call my cell phone if there is an intruder. I have had this setup for about a month now. I have received no "false alarms". But when I walk in the door my cell phone starts to ring, until I throw the swith on the telespy phone.
This thing has so many applications, and mine has worked flawlessly.
opinion Feb 16, 2012
By opinion The device works to some extent..1. Instructions lousy.. very little detail(assume intentional) 2. Test mode is a no-go,does not work and frankly don't know if was ever intended to. 3. With 10 min of trial and error you can get device to work ie you dial nimber, hang up, turn on, it calls then sets itself, after 60 seconds or so it will detect motion/heat(within perhaps 20 ft. and dial previously dialed number nearly without fail. 4. Microphone is acceptable at best--it will pick up loud talk or banging around. Worth $45 not really. $25 yes.
